Birthday Tidings!
I brought fic! (IKR) For
sabaceanbabe, on the occasion of her birthday!
I've had this sitting around for a while. So, of course, it's been Jossed. But that's okay.
Title: Out of His Time. Lost.
Fandom: Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles
Characters: John, Derek, Kyle
Rating: Teen
Warnings: Character death (hahaha, we all die for John Connor), AU after "Adam Raised a Cain"
Disclaimer: Seriously?
Notes: Not beta'd; mistakes and lameness are mine.
Words: More than 100 and less than 2000
In the end, it didn't matter.

They couldn't stop it. You don't stop Judgment Day.

"I have to leave, John."
"What?
"You heard me."
"What are you talking about?"
"Century's coming, John. For you. For Kyle."
"We haven't even found them yet, Derek. Why are you...?" A blank stare down a dark, empty tunnel was the only answer John got. "Oh. I see."
---
Derek had sent one of his guys out on recon. One he trusted. Hastings. "Downtown. Look for two boys. One in his early twenties, the other thirteen or fourteen. Derek and Kyle." If Derek's man had made the connection, he didn't let on. "I need their sitrep. They don't need to know why." The "neither do you" was implied.
Derek's man had, of course, come back with news of the Reese boys. Both alive, both healthy, except the older one, Derek, had taken shrapnel to the ankle a few months back.
Nodding, Derek shifted his weight only slightly to his left foot.
---
"Listen, in a few days, you're going to meet a hot-headed punk kid and his little brother. I can't be here when that happens."
"That's bullshit, Derek, and you know it. Take a new name. Hell, take my name. Please."
"You don't think that kid looks exactly like I did twenty years ago? That he won't notice the resemblance? You'll need to earn this kid's trust, become his best friend. Take care of his brother. You can't do that with me here."
"It doesn't matter, what happened before. You've lived through J-Day. Twice. You are a good soldier, my best adviser, and my only family. That punk kid, he's not my family, not yet anyway. And if Century is coming, I need to know someone is out here fighting. This time is not last time. No fate."
They argued for days. John couldn't possibly take Derek seriously. Besides, if Derek was ernest about leaving, John knew he'd be gone.
---
In the end, it didn't matter.
Word came in of an HK attack downtown. The survivors were running South. Derek's face blanched. "Shit. This is an ambush. Get both cells at once."
"We have to get up top. Provide cover."
"John, we ..."
"Let's go."
Derek was right, of course. HKs pushed the downtown cell toward them, while more attacked from the South. John had only a moment after the first explosion to watch Derek fall. The second volley took out most of his crew.
John woke in...he wasn't really sure. Underground. Crowded. Next to a boy. A kid trying hard to hide the fact that he'd been crying. "Where are we?"
The kid started. "The old mall, Century City."
Damn you, Derek. "What's your name, Kid?" As if he even had to ask.
The kid wiped his face. "Kyle. Kyle Reese."
"I'm John. You okay, Kyle?"
"Yeah, I guess.
"Any of your family survive Judgment Day?"
"My older brother, Derek. I lost him while we were running."
"Don't worry. We'll get out of here and find him."
"What about you? Did any of your family survive?"
"No."
---
In the end, it didn't matter.

You don't stop Judgment Day.
YES. Which has always been Sarah's weakness, i think, trying so doggedly to prevent it when it can't be prevented. All they've managed to do is fuck up the future EVEN MORE.
Both alive, both healthy, except the older one, Derek, had taken shrapnel to the ankle a few months back.
Nodding, Derek shifted his weight only slightly to his left foot.
A++ I loved that bit. OH, TIME TRAVEL.
Hell, take my name. Please.
OH, JOHN.

YES. And I feel that the show is acknowledging that by sending John to the future, while Sarah still can't accept it and is staying to continue to try and stop it.
I had always assumed that Derek (our Derek) would make it to J-Day again...only to be pissed as hell that they couldn't stop it, and to be there for John.
Yes, John, always the reluctant leader!

The whole thing is one big, time-traveling mind-frak, isn't it? Love this: ...the older one, Derek, had taken shrapnel to the ankle a few months back.
Nodding, Derek shifted his weight only slightly to his left foot.
And Derek gets John to where he needs to be to save Kyle. *happy sigh*

*had not even considered that it was Derek that got John to Kyle O.O*
