Being 1000 miles away is making it tough to get accurate information about my Papaw. Apparently, my Memaw can't really remember the day he fell, and the evidence shows that it was about a week between the time he fell and the time he got to the hospital. Protective Services is questioning my dad and aunt as to why he didn't get treatment for so long. I wish I could barge in there and yell "because my grandpa is a stubborn fool and my grandma's crazy," but that probably wouldn't go over so well with Protective Services either.

And the surgery information I had was bad as well. They fixed a shunt into his knee that will prevent blood clots (it will be with him for the rest of his life) on Tuesday (the day he was admitted), and the surgery on Thursday was to repair his hip. So I guess he's not having a replacement, but I doubt he'll be able to walk again.

At the end of all this, both my grandparents will probably end up in the home. That just makes me so sad. They are both fiercely independent and proud, and I'm not sure either of them will be happy in a home, especially if they choose to stay in Texas, since there's really no one there to visit them.

In January, when my mom went to visit them, she told me they needed some form of in home care, and I told my dad, but he insisted that they were fine. I wish he would have listened.

After that visit, my mom expressly forbid me (ha) to leave my job so I could move home and take care of them, even for a short time. Now I don't know what to do. I'm just so lost in all of this.

This is more than I generally share with anyone, even my closest friends, but I needed to get it off my chest.

My grandparents are the same way. They're both fiercly independent and I dread the day when they aren't going to be as independent as they want to. Because it's going to be hard for them to accept. On top of all that? Yeah, my grandparents are raising my uncle's kids. Two teenagers! I have no idea how they manage, but they do.

It's sounds like it's going to be sad, tough situation for all involved. I'm sorry. Just try to stay positive and remind your grandparents how much you love them.
